Culturally-Sensitive Practice

My lived experience as a member of multiple marginalized communities inspired my dedication to research, clinical, and community work focused on understanding the needs of our diverse population and providing culturally-sensitive psychological services.
Issues related to race, ethnicity, gender, age, culture, religion, sexual orientation and ability status may or may not be the central problems motivating therapy. It is important to have a therapist who possesses specific knowledge, awareness, and skills in these areas in order to be able to sensitively apply this knowledge as needed.
Below you will find more details about the nature of my research and community work focused on the intersection of diversity and mental health.

Research

My research interests are focused on the intersection of ethnicity, race, culture, gender, and related stressors on well-being. I have been especially interested in the experiences of second generation Canadians (born in Canada to Immigrant parents) and understanding both the strengths and challenges with having to straddle two cultural worlds. Much of my research, writing, and clinical work has recently been focused on bicultural stress.

Practical Applications

As a scientist-practitioner, not only am I dedicated to ongoing research and learning, I am also actively involved in practical applications of this knowledge. Recent work includes:

  • Development of a group psychotherapy program for bicultural stress
  • Work on the Speaking Your Language Project, a collaborative project between the University of Toronto, Ryerson University, and OCADU, which focused on helping meet the mental health needs of international students.
  • Work as an an advisory board member at the Barbara Schlifer Clinic developing culturally-sensitive protocols and providing culturally-sensitive research mentorship.
  • Guest-speaking engagements on bicultural stress and well-being.

You do not have to do this alone.
